THYROID DISEASE and PREGNANCY


Thyroid disease is the 2nd most common endocrine disorder that 
affects women of childbearing age
Hyperthyroidism occurs in 0.2% of pregnancies. 

Hypothyroidism occurs in 2.5% of pregnancies. Postpartum thyroid disease occurs in 5-10% of women after delivery who don’t have history of thyroid disease. 25% of women with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus develop postpartum thyroid dysfunction. 

Incidence of thyroid cancer in pregnancy is 1 per 1000. Malignancy is found in up to 5-40% of thyroid nodules discovered during pregnancy.
